The first days into a new position

One of the most pertinent issues that my mentees realize relate to the first steps to take a new position. Undoubtedly, the first impression is important, but the results obtained in the first two months are essential to indicate whether you fit for the position. During the first two months you encounter resistance, difficulties and results to change. In Brazil we have the culture of three months of experience but make no mistake: all companies have the same culture, with minor variations, and no manager will wait to decide a cut on the last day. These are the points that you should take great care when starting a new position or a job.
  • Check the current state of your position: before bothering to know their direct and indirect teams, the most important is to know the status of the position you are taking. Rare are the times when you take a position where no one has gone before, so search the historical position and the status of the deliverables will give the necessary signals for the next step. A key tip is: try to use your interview process to advance up the dynamics of the organization and the expectations for you between a hypothetical plan already outlined;
  • Establish your internal network: after knowing the historical records of their position, the next step is to establish a network of internal and external business. More important to establish relationships with people who have registered historical, worry about what has not. These people should be examined closely to understand why the lack of records. The account of his direct and indirect staff is an excellent indicator of the challenges you will face, as well as assist in the next step;
  • Create your social network: knowing your coworkers is the time to establish social bonds and mainly analyze your work and personal profile to establish the best method of communication with your team. Undoubtedly this step is easier said than done because if not all people are open to new but with some training and experience, you will be able to identify the small gestures and signals that indicate whether you are pleasing or not;
  • Present your goals: your knowledge of the team indicate the best way to establish your communication channel. Knowing the team is critical to identify the type of communication to be used;
  • Fail fast: perhaps most importantly, know when it is time to declare that an action point failed to establish grounds (not guilty), possible solutions to remedy the situation and document the event to follow in the future. Faster is bypassed, the more effective the return without counting to prevent or reduce problems with your end customer. Finally, always keep a channel open for emergency communication to avoid surprises;
  • Establish trust: Finally, the most important will always demonstrate that you came up with solutions, not problems, and your workgroup can count on you and your information. Worse than lying, never mask or embellishment to look at it more or less striking: these attitudes have a negative effect much worse than a lie. Clarifying an item hazy: Yes, you should omit certain information whenever your position requests, but make it clear to your peers and superiors how you do so that everyone is aligned. Two details that do not need to enter the previous list (must be permanent) are:
  1. Never stop investing in you: the professional to develop your knowledge is not a professional who seeks to improve their results;
  2. Keep your step: if you think that the first day is a race, you are wrong. Think like a marathon, where you have to keep a steady pace to have the expected result. The marathon does not end at the end of your trial period, but in his retirement.
Rare are the professionals who come to end career with no blemish on his resume. All are subject to failure but it is imperative that failures do not recur and over his career, trend fault must border on zero. The professional can see the crisis before it happened and plan alternatives always have a greater chance of success.
